In this episode of Smart Freight Conversations: The Leadership Series, we are joined by Kaisa Helena Tikk, Head of Commercial Sustainability at Maersk, to explore how one of the world’s biggest shipping and logistics companies is reshaping the future of global supply chains.
How is Maersk working toward net zero by 2040?
Maersk has set science-based targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, aiming to reduce Scope 1 and 2 by 35 percent and Scope 3 by 22 percent by 2030. The company has introduced a fleet of dual-fuel methanol vessels, completed its first retrofit project, and secured half of the fuel needed for its 2027 operations through partnerships with suppliers such as Goldwind and LONGi.
What this looks like in practice
Kaisa points to collaborations with brands like Nestlé, where low-emission ocean transport has reduced shipping emissions by more than 80 percent. Maersk is also investing in inland decarbonization with over 100 electric trucks in the United States, testing sustainable aviation fuel, and electrifying terminals and warehouses.
Why does this matter?
Decarbonizing global supply chains requires solutions that can be applied across many types of customers, from small businesses beginning their journey to large companies setting new benchmarks. For Maersk, progress comes through a mix of innovation and partnership.
