In this episode of Smart Freight Conversations: The Leadership Series, we speak with Moritz Tölke, Director for Green Projects at Sovereign Speed, about how the carrier is turning its emissions strategy into action.
What is Sovereign Speed’s ambition?
Sovereign Speed has committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42 percent by 2030, with targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As a carrier operating its own fleet, the company’s focus is on reducing direct emissions through the use of renewable HVO100 fuel, fleet electrification, and greater operational efficiency. Its data collection and reporting follow the GLEC Framework and ISO 14083, ensuring accuracy and alignment with international standards.
What does this look like in practice?
Moritz explains that Sovereign Speed already operates more than 500,000 liters of HVO100 across key European lanes and is deploying new electric trucks in Germany through joint projects with logistics service providers, shippers, and vehicle manufacturers. Each project begins with open collaboration to align investments, measurement methods, and reporting. The company tracks progress using primary fuel data verified through accredited tools such as Shipzero, providing a transparent view of real performance rather than modeled estimates. Sovereign Speed also works with Smart Freight Centre on initiatives such as Market Based Measures, Book and Claim, and sustainable procurement to strengthen consistency and comparability across the sector.
Why does this matter?
Sovereign Speed’s experience shows that meaningful decarbonization depends on credible data, collaboration, and shared standards. By acting early and aligning its work with Smart Freight Centre’s guidance, the company is helping to build trust and accelerate progress across the logistics value chain. Its approach demonstrates that medium-sized carriers can play a central role in delivering measurable, scalable climate action.
