Introduction to Book and Claim

  • The differences between market-based and physical greenhouse gas (GHG) emission accounting for transportation.
  • The constraints associated with physical GHG accounting with respect to incentivizing transportation decarbonization.
  • Terminology associated with corporate GHG emission inventories that utilize physical and/or market based accounting approaches.
  • Fundamental concepts that underpin SFC's Market-Based Measures Accounting Framework such as 'LETs', and the difference between 'direct' and 'indirect' booking and claiming.
  • Key constraints that ensure high quality participation in SFC's Market-Based Measures Accounting Framework. 
  • What this means in the context of emissions reporting, GLEC & ISO 14083 and your organization's decarbonization strategy.
  • What a chain of custody model is and the general differences between Book and Claim, mass balance, and physical separation chain of custody models. 
  • The four organisation types, how they relate to each other, and what roles they play when collaborating in a Book and Claim context.

Book and Claim in Practice

  • Who's who? & What’s what?—differentiating between Book and Claim systems and their use in a market based approach in transportation.
  • The relationship between Book and Claim and emission accounting—within SFC’s publications as well as the normative accounting landscape, including ISO 14083 as well as GHGP and SBTi.
  • Managing and applying the five integrity measures and constraints.
  • How a Book and Claim chain of custody is applied differently between transportation modes and organization types.
  • Calculating the profile of Solutions and LETS using common data tools.
  • How to identify an organization's application of market-based accounting in GHG inventory examples and consider use in your own inventory.
  • Understand SFC’s Conformity Assessment Scheme and its expansion to certify application of Book and Claim and a market based approach. 
  • Earn a Certificate of Completion (upon completion of the content and required tasks).
