This session explains how harmonized lifecycle assessment principles are converted into practical emission factors, and how key assumptions influence the results for conventional and emerging fuel pathways.

Why This Course Matters

Emission factors play a critical role in quantifying greenhouse gas emissions from transport fuels and supporting consistent reporting across the transport sector. However, emission factors are the result of methodological choices, system boundary definitions, data selection, allocation approaches, and assumptions made throughout a fuel's lifecycle. 

Building on the concepts introduced in Harmonized Methodology Part 1, this training explores how the CLEVER methodology transforms lifecycle assessment principles into practical, transparent, and reproducible default emission factors. Participants will examine real-world examples covering different energy carriers (e.g. used cooking oil biodiesel (FAME), compressed biomethane from manure (CBM), and Fischer-Tropsch diesel derived from forestry residues), illustrating how different fuel pathways require different assumptions and data considerations. 

The session also introduces sensitivity analysis and uncertainty assessment, helping participants understand which variables have the greatest influence on results and how emission factors should be interpreted in practice. By the end of the training, participants will have a stronger understanding of how default factors are developed, how bespoke factors can be created, and how harmonized methodologies support credible emissions accounting and informed decision-making within the transport sector. 

Required pre-work:
Participants are encouraged to complete the following preceding live virtual trainings: 'The 'Hidden Battleground' of Fuel Emission Factors and Harmonized Methodology: The Foundations - LCA & Boundaries in advance. 

This session is part of a broader training series running throughout 2026, focused on fuel emission factor calculation, the appropriate use of default fuel emission factors, and supporting informed decision-making in transport emissions.
